NSF-Simons AI Institute for Cosmic Origins: The AI-Astro Revolution at 6 Months and Beyond…
Powered by the revolution in AI, astronomy is now itself entering a new era of AI-driven discovery! On the day of this colloquium CosmicAI will be exactly 6 months old. I will present an overview of CosmicAI and our objectives to harness AI to better explore astronomical data, observe the universe, explain the phenomena we observe, and accelerate the astronomy research cycle. I will summarize what we have accomplished to date and describe our plans for increasing interdisciplinary literacy and training within the astronomy community. I will also discuss the state of AI in the field of astronomy, including community opinions as reported in a recent AAS survey and efforts to expand AI-Astronomy application through advocacy, new funding opportunities, and educational initiatives.
