Description
Galaxy Properties in the Early Universe Studied with CoDa III Simulation
The Epoch of Reionization began when galaxies and stars formed and released ionizing radiation into the IGM, and lasted over the course of the first billion years. The drivers of reionization, star-forming galaxies, are well-understood within the LCDM cosmology and galaxy formation theory, at least we thought, until recently. However, as we witness more galaxies in the early Universe with JWST, our understanding of galaxy formation is being challenged by the exotic galaxy properties we are finding, such as the surprising abundance of bright galaxies, strong emission lines, and metal content. A successful galaxy formation theory is expected to reproduce these properties self-consistently. Large-scale cosmological simulations are widely performed and studied to demonstrate all the complicated physics that shape galaxies and further our understanding of galaxy formation by comparing their predictions on galaxy properties with observations. Towards this end, we have analyzed the results of the latest state-of-the-art radiation-hydro simulation of fully-coupled galaxy formation and reionization by The Cosmic Dawn (“CoDa”) Project, CoDa III, through the end of the EoR and beyond, down to z = 4.6. CoDa III is the first trillion-element radiation-hydro simulation of the EoR, with enough dynamic range to resolve the formation of every star-forming galaxy believed to be responsible for reionization and metal enrichment in its simulation volume of 94.4 cMpc across. We will present CoDa III results on the UV luminosity function, star formation, and metal content, to provide a theoretical ground for the physical interpretation of what is observed with JWST.
