The Mysterious Galaxy at z = 0: A Rosetta Stone for Galaxy-scale Star Formation
The Milky Way offers unique opportunities to observe star formation up close. On the other hand, our location inside the Galaxy obscures the overall picture. After a brief review of the properties of the Milky Way, I will report on recent progress in characterizing star formation across the full extent of the Galaxy for comparison to other galaxies. Three different methods for predicting the star formation rate, including one used often for other galaxies, agree remarkably well with the most precise value for the star formation rate in the Milky Way. They also agree among themselves on the radial dependence of star formation and on constructed face-on maps. The Milky Way allows us to extend extragalactic relations, like the KS relation, into regions inaccessible in other galaxies.
